Internationally acclaimed director Hou Hsou-hsien (Millenium Mambo, Flowers of Shanghai) is set to produce a new film in Taipei beginning in Spring 2009, reports the Taiwan Journal. What's unusual about the project is that is was commissioned by the Taipei City government, which will contribute more than half a million dollars toward the film in the hopes that it will promote tourism to the democratic island. Up-and-coming Hsiao Ya-Chuan (once Hsien's assistant director) will direct the picture."The film should reflect Taipei's beauty and vitality as well as its many other outstanding aspects in order to help the city attract more foreign tourists," a city spokesman told the Journal. The film will show several markets, Taipei Zoo, Maokong and showcase the city's world-famous Mass Rapid Transit (MRT).
The film may be able to capture the magnetic city, as Hsien has ample experience shooting in his native Taiwan. Whether it will end up coming across as an extended commercial is yet to be determined.

How about getting Jackie Chan to star in it and have him fight bad guys while climbing up Taipei 101? Now THAT wouldn't look like a commercial!
